The thyroid gland plays a central role in regulating metabolism. The hormones it produces influence how the body uses energy, regulates temperature, supports digestion and maintains healthy skin, hair and mood.
When thyroid function slows, even slightly, many of these systems begin to change. Energy can feel lower than it should. Weight may become easier to gain and harder to lose. One reason this can be confusing is that standard thyroid testing does not always capture the full picture. A TSH result within the normal range simply means it has not crossed the threshold for diagnosis. It does not necessarily mean the thyroid is functioning optimally.

Choose supportive forms of movement
Long, high-intensity cardio can act as a stress signal for the body. For the Thyroid Type, gentler forms of exercise such as strength training, Pilates, yoga, walking or swimming often support metabolic health more effectively.
Reduce exposure to substances that interfere with iodine
Fluoride and chlorine in drinking water can interfere with iodine uptake by the thyroid. Using a water filter for drinking and cooking water and choosing fluoride-free toothpaste can help reduce this exposure.
Include iodine-rich foods
Iodine is one of the key minerals required for thyroid hormone production. Seaweed is a particularly rich natural source and can be included through foods such as nori sheets, kelp or seaweed seasoning.
Support gut health
Around 20% of the conversion of thyroid hormone into its active form takes place in the gut. Supporting the gut microbiome with fibre-rich foods and fermented foods can help support this process.
