Cinnamon Apples

 

IS THIS THE PERFECT MEAL FOR GUT HEALTH?

Our gut flora is so important in managing our immunity. The human gastrointestinal tract constitutes about 70% of our immune system – the complex system within our bodies that protects us and keeps us healthy. 

My Metabolic Balance clients often ask why they must eat 1 Apple a day. In answer I explain that it is due to the incredible health benefits of apples. There is much research on the positive health effects of apple-derived polyphenols, dietary fibre, prebiotics and minerals and many other health benefits.

I have found that this recipe has proven so effective for many of my clients. Research has shown that stewing the apples in this way and eaten with yoghurt and probiotics increases the health benefits. Cinnamon added at the time of cooking increases the anti-inflammatory components and offers an insulin modifying role that helps counteract the impact of consuming cooked apples (cooking increases the release of fruit sugars). The almonds provide protein and immune benefits when eaten with skins on.

Ingredients 
6 Bramley cooking apples (or apples of choice, organic is possible-)
1/2 cup water
2 tsp. cinnamon
1 Saccharomyces Boulardii 250mg capsule sprinkled on the top – or swallowed separately
1 Biodoph 7 plus capsule sprinkled on top
1 x LGG sprinkled on top – or swallowed separately
½ container of organic natural yogurt (dairy) or coconut or soy equivalent 
4-5 almonds in their skins. chopped

Directions
1. Core the apples and chop them into small evenly sized pieces.
2. Put all the ingredients in a covered, heavy-bottomed pan and cook for about 15 minutes, stirring regularly. Cook until soft with rough shapes, no longer identifiable as apple slices. 

Store in ramekins in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze.

Notes: 
Saccharomyces Boulardii is the world’s most researched probiotic substance which supports immune tolerance. It can help with upper respiratory infections, gut healing, antibiotic use and diarrhoea. Useful for travelling. 
LGG – the best studied and most documented probiotic lactic acid bacteria strain in the world. Good for IBS and other digestive disorders.
Biodoph 7 plus – specific blend of 3 prebiotics and 7 probiotics. For gut healing and inflammation in small and large intestine.
