Chocolate Orange Tofu Bowl

Ingredients

Serves 1

  • 80g Silken tofu
  • 2 tsp Cocoa powder
  • 1 orange
  • 1 tbsp Grain free granola (see recipe here)

Method

  1. Zest the orange and blend together with the tofu and cocoa powder until smooth. 
  2. Use a sharp knife to remove the peel and pith from the orange then slice the flesh. 
  3. Pour the chocolate tofu into a serving bowl and top with the orange and granola, if using.

Tofu contains phytoestrogens, particularly a type called isoflavones. Phytoestrogens are plant-derived compounds that have a chemical structure similar to that of the estrogen produced by the human body. During perimenopause, when a woman’s oestrogen levels fluctuate and generally decline, phytoestrogens can mimic some of the functions of natural estrogen. This can help alleviate some common perimenopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, and mood swings. Isoflavones in tofu can bind to oestrogen receptors in the body, potentially exerting mild estrogenic effects that may balance some of the hormonal fluctuations experienced during perimenopause. The isoflavones in tofu may also contribute to bone health. During perimenopause and menopause, the risk of osteoporosis increases due to the decline in oestrogen, which is vital for bone density maintenance. Isoflavones may help in preserving bone density and strength, thereby reducing the risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures.
