What is Vitamin D?
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin and comes as vitamins D1, D2, and D3.
Your body produces vitamin D naturally when it’s directly exposed to sunlight. You can also get Vitamin D from certain foods and supplements to ensure you have adequate levels.
We need Vitamin D for healthy bones, teeth and muscles as well as a healthy immune system.
So apart from not getting enough sunshine, what else can affect vitamin D levels?
Certain conditions, if left untreated, can prevent us from absorbing vitamin D through supplement. These include Crohn’s Disease, Cystic Fibrosis and Coeliac Disease.
Being overweight can also affect levels of vitamin D since fat cells keep it isolated so that it’s not released. If you’ve had weight loss surgery or surgery that affects your stomach size, it can also be difficult for your body to absorb vitamin D.
Certain medications can cause vitamin D deficiency. These include:
❌ Steroids
❌ Laxatives
❌ Cholesterol-lowering drugs
Genetics may also impact a person’s vitamin levels.
