Low Thyroid And Weight Gain

Is your weight creeping up, even if you’ve stuck firmly to your diet and exercised religiously? Do you find that just one weekend away causes pounds to pile on? Or is the weight loss just super slow? ⠀

Are you severely restricting your calories in an attempt to lose weight? Have you tried Intermittent Fasting and actually piled on the pounds? ⠀

Calorie restriction has a significant impact on your thyroid. Studies show that your inactive thyroid hormone, called reverse T3, increases with dieting and competes with your active thyroid hormone (T3) to bind to your receptors. Both short and long-term severe dieting can result in up to a 50 percent decrease in your active T3 hormone. Increased reverse T3 and reduced active T3 may result in a worsening hypothyroid condition. ⠀

Long periods of fasting can also lead to low blood sugar levels and cause your adrenal glands to release a hormone called cortisol. Long term this can also impact thyroid function particularly if you have a SNP on your FBPK1 gene (Thyroid Balance report by @lifecodegx). ⠀

If you are on medication and still not seeing results you may have a problem converting T4 to the active thyroid hormone T3. A SNP on your D102 gene could suggest poor conversion of T4 to T3. Your T4 and TSH may still look normal in blood testing. Thyroid Resistance? An inability of T3 to attach to receptors inside the cell and activate enzymes. T3 levels may look normal so genetic polymorphisms may be at play here. See my last post on how to test for this through DNA testing. ⠀
