So many women I work with feel tired all the time. They’re sleeping well (or trying to), eating “healthy,” and still waking up constantly tired, foggy, and unmotivated.
If that’s you, don’t just write it off as stress, a busy lifestyle or perimenopause. Your liver — one of the hardest-working and most overlooked organs — could be the root cause.
Your Liver Does More Than Just Detox
Most people associate the liver with alcohol metabolism or detoxing after Christmas. But it plays a central role in:
- Hormone metabolism (including oestrogen clearance)
- Energy production and blood sugar balance
- Fat breakdown and digestion
- Immune function and inflammation regulation
- Storage of essential nutrients like iron, B12 and folate
- Clearing toxins, medications, and by-products from the body
When your liver is under pressure — whether from blood sugar imbalances, stress, medications, alcohol, poor diet or hormone fluctuations — your whole system can feel out of sync.
Some of the Liver’s Most Important Functions
Your liver supports virtually every area of your health. Here are just a few of its essential roles:
- Converting food into energy – by breaking down carbohydrates, fats and proteins
- Regulating blood sugar – by storing and releasing glucose as needed
- Breaking down fats – and using them for energy or hormone production
- Storing key nutrients – like iron, copper, B12 and folate
- Producing bile – to support digestion and elimination
- Clearing hormones and toxins – helping reduce excess oestrogen, stress hormones and environmental toxins
- Fighting infections – especially those arising in the gut via specialised immune cells (Kupffer cells)
When any of these processes are impaired, you may feel sluggish, bloated, foggy or just “off.”
How Poor Liver Function Affects Energy
The liver is involved in three major areas of energy metabolism: carbohydrates, fats and proteins.
When you eat, your liver helps regulate blood sugar by storing excess glucose as glycogen and releasing it later when your body needs energy. If this process is sluggish, you might experience blood sugar dips, cravings, or afternoon slumps.
It also breaks down fats to be used as fuel and converts amino acids from protein into usable energy. A by-product of this protein metabolism is ammonia — which the liver turns into urea so it can be safely excreted. If the liver is sluggish, ammonia builds up, making you feel tired and foggy.
How to Know if Your Liver Needs Support
You don’t have to be unwell to have a liver that’s underperforming. Some common signs include:
- Feeling tired or heavy in the morning
- Brain fog or poor focus
- Bloating, especially after fatty foods
- Hormonal symptoms like PMS, mood swings or weight gain and much more! You know how I love to talk about oestrogen detox!
- Low alcohol tolerance
- Skin breakouts or itching
- Stubborn weight, especially around the middle
Many of these are also common during perimenopause, when the body relies even more on the liver to detox excess oestrogen. (See blog on Oestrogen: Understanding Its Role and Detoxification)
Ways to Support Your Liver (and Your Energy)
1. Hydration with Electrolytes
Hydration is essential for your liver to flush out toxins and support lymphatic flow. But plain water isn’t enough — you need electrolytes to properly hydrate your cells and support ATP (energy) production.
What we use at PCH:
– BodyBio E-Lyte– formulated with the three key ingredients you need to restore optimal electrolyte balance: sodium, potassium and magnesium. (See Pippa Loves)
2. Curcumin for Liver Resilience
Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, helps protect liver cells from damage, reduces inflammation, and supports bile production. It’s one of our favourite herbs for liver and hormone support.
What we recommend:
– PCH Curcumin – combines curcumin with milk thistle and artichoke for daily detox and inflammation support.
3. Choline for Fat Metabolism and Bile Flow
If you feel bloated after meals or have sluggish digestion, you might need more choline. It helps emulsify fats, supports bile production, and prevents fat accumulation in the liver.
Our go-to:
– PCH Detox– contains choline, which supports liver cell health and hormone clearance.
4. B Vitamins for Energy and Detox
B vitamins are essential for energy production and liver detoxification. They help your body convert food into fuel and also protect the liver from oxidative stress.
Key B vitamins include:
- B1 (thiamin) – for energy metabolism
- B2 (riboflavin) – protects liver cells from oxidative stress
- B5 (pantothenic acid) – helps synthesise hormones and neurotransmitters
- B9 (folate) and B12 – both stored in the liver and crucial for detox and energy
What we use:
– PCH B Complex – a high-quality formula with bioavailable forms of all the key B vitamins.
Final Thoughts: It’s Time to Check In With Your Liver
Your liver is your internal engine — quietly running everything from energy to hormones to digestion. If you’re constantly tired, foggy, or feeling “off,” it might be time to give it some support.
You don’t need to do extreme detoxes or cut everything out — just provide your liver with the right nutrients, hydration, and daily support.
Don’t forget to check out our Thyroid Symptom Checker and Adrenal Fatigue Questionnaire in the Free Resources section.
Thyroid and adrenal health are closely linked to liver function — your liver helps convert thyroid hormones into their active form and also breaks down excess stress hormones like cortisol. If your liver is under pressure, these systems can easily become imbalanced, leading to low energy, weight gain, and hormonal issues.
