Your thyroid slows down because your body has told it to. It is a protective response written into human biology for thousands of years, and once you understand why it happens, the symptoms start to make complete sense.
This is the thyroid survival theory.
Where This Comes From
For most of human history, winter meant scarcity. Food was harder to find, temperatures dropped and energy had to be carefully managed. The body needed a way to read what was happening in the environment and respond, burning less, storing more, conserving everything it had until conditions improved.
The thyroid was that system.
When the brain picked up signals of cold, reduced daylight, limited food or ongoing threat, it suppressed thyroid function. Everything that happened next was the body doing exactly what it was designed to do.
We can actually measure this. TSH levels rise in winter and fall in summer across large populations. Even people with no diagnosed thyroid condition can show signs of subclinical hypothyroidism in the colder months. It is the thyroid responding to the season, exactly as it is programmed to do.
What Happens When Thyroid Function Declines
Every symptom of low thyroid function makes complete sense when you understand what the body is trying to do.
Metabolism slows
When food is scarce, a slower metabolic rate means the body uses its reserves more slowly. This is the whole point. It is why so many women find they gain weight in winter without changing anything they eat. From an evolutionary perspective, this is exactly what was supposed to happen.
The body holds on to fat
A woman who stored fat efficiently through autumn and winter was a woman who survived to spring. The body’s reluctance to let go of stored fat when it perceives scarcity is not a willpower issue. It is the body doing its job.
Fertility is suppressed
Pregnancy and feeding a baby are among the most energy-demanding things the human body can do. When the body perceives threat or limited food, it reduces the hormones that support ovulation and progesterone production. This is why low thyroid function so often shows up as irregular cycles, difficulty conceiving and a poor luteal phase. The reproductive system is the first thing the body is prepared to put on hold.
Body temperature drops
Keeping the body warm costs energy. Running at a lower temperature reduces how much the body needs to use. This is why feeling cold all the time, even in a warm room, even when everyone around you is fine, is one of the most reliable signs of low thyroid function.
Digestion slows down
Thyroid hormones directly control the muscle contractions that move food through the gut. When thyroid function declines, everything slows: digestion, bowel transit, gastric emptying. This leads to bloating, constipation and poor nutrient absorption. It also creates the right conditions for bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine, known as SIBO, which is closely linked to hypothyroidism for exactly this reason.
Mood and motivation drop
Low drive and reduced motivation conserve energy. In a genuinely threatening environment, stillness makes sense. This is why low thyroid function and depression are so closely connected, and why addressing thyroid function has helped women who had not responded to antidepressants.
Brain fog sets in
The brain uses more energy than any other organ in the body. When the body is in conservation mode, it reduces what it invests in cognitive function. Poor memory, difficulty concentrating and mental sluggishness in hypothyroidism are a direct result of this.
Hair and nails suffer
Hair growth and nail strength are not essential for survival. When the body is rationing resources, these are the first things it deprioritises. This is why hair loss and brittle nails are such common signs of low thyroid function.
Why This Becomes a Modern Problem
In ancestral terms, thyroid suppression was temporary. Winter ended. Food became available again. Warmth returned, daylight increased, the threat passed and the body received the signals it needed to come back online.
The modern problem is that those signals never arrive.
Your body cannot tell the difference between actual famine and the physiological load of a stressful, sleep-deprived, toxin-laden modern life. It reads the incoming information and responds to what it detects, not to what you know to be true about your situation. The suppression stays on. Not just for a season, but indefinitely.
This is why so many women are living with low thyroid function that has nothing to do with winter.
What Keeps the Thyroid Suppressed Today
Chronic stress
When cortisol is elevated over a long period, it directly blocks the conversion of T4 into active T3, the form of thyroid hormone your cells can actually use. Instead, T4 gets converted into something called reverse T3, which occupies the receptor site without doing anything useful. You can have a completely normal TSH result on a standard blood test while your cells are not getting the active thyroid hormone they need. This is one of the reasons so many women are told their results are fine when they clearly do not feel fine.

When cortisol dysregulation has been ongoing, the adrenals themselves need direct support. Fluoride and chlorine in tap water
Fluoride, chlorine and bromine belong to the same chemical family as iodine. Because they are structurally so similar, they compete with iodine for the same receptor sites in the thyroid. When those sites are occupied by these other chemicals, iodine cannot get in, and iodine is what the thyroid uses to make its hormones. UK tap water contains both fluoride and chlorine routinely.
Bromide in commercial bread
Potassium bromate is added to commercial flour as a dough conditioner. Bromine competes with iodine at the same receptor sites in the thyroid. Eating commercial bread and pasta regularly adds a low-level but constant iodine-blocking load that most women have no idea about.
Oestrogen dominance
When oestrogen is high relative to progesterone, whether because the body is producing too much, the liver is not clearing it efficiently, or environmental oestrogen exposure is adding to the load, it raises levels of a protein called thyroid-binding globulin, or TBG. TBG grabs hold of thyroid hormones in the bloodstream and keeps them inactive. Even when the thyroid is producing hormones adequately, they cannot reach the cells where they are needed. This is one of the key reasons oestrogen dominance and low thyroid symptoms so often appear together.

Very low carbohydrate diets and caloric restriction
Prolonged caloric restriction or very low carbohydrate eating is read by the body as famine, which is exactly the signal that switches thyroid suppression on in the first place. The body responds by reducing thyroid function further and increasing reverse T3. Adequate carbohydrate is not a problem for thyroid function. It is one of the things that tells the body food is available.
Poor sleep and disrupted circadian rhythm
TSH follows a daily rhythm, peaking overnight while you sleep. Disrupted sleep directly disrupts this rhythm. Even moderate sleep restriction raises cortisol and suppresses TSH, the same hormonal chain as chronic stress.
Environmental toxins
Pesticides, plastics, particularly BPA and phthalates, heavy metals and other persistent environmental chemicals all interfere with thyroid function, through direct effects on hormone production, by blocking receptor sites, or by disrupting the conversion of T4 to T3.
Why the Body Cannot Tell the Difference
The part of the brain that controls thyroid function reads biochemical signals, not context. Elevated cortisol means threat. Low iodine means scarcity. Poor sleep signals an unsafe environment. Oestrogen dominance and toxic load both register as biological stress.
The suppression stays on because nothing in the modern environment sends a clear enough signal that it should stand down.
What Supports Thyroid Function
Eating enough carbohydrate tells the body food is available. Warmth tells it the season has turned. Filtered water removes the halogen load that blocks iodine uptake. Consistent sleep restores the natural TSH rhythm. Reducing the stress load allows cortisol to drop and T4 to T3 conversion to restore. Supporting oestrogen clearance through the liver frees up the thyroid hormones already in circulation.
